If the husband does not have job,can he claim alimony from working wife as per 13B Hindu Marriage Act?
SHANTHI M asked:
He calls himself freelance journalist, musician etc and have attempted in these in past. After marriage,he completely abandoned these stating there is no way to come up due to politics in these fields. As told earlier,I have given all financial and medical assistance. There was immense pressure from him to tell lies, that he is earning, working from home etc, which after sometime did not work .My children did not question these, even at the age of 18 & 19,they knew the truth. He used every opportunity, either children not listening to him or my parents not consulting him(we lived in my parents house).to meet his new demand,by saying he will go away.He says so as he has not informed his people at home that he is married to me as in the state of love,he said he will tell them when time comes.I called up his sister last week to inform the truth as he always said he is living in a different city and not Chennai. He left two weeks back demanding Rs.15,000 per month, just to be his lover or letting him free.Ihad taken it so much with secret tears as it is my second marriage and my choice. As his normal practice his writes such mails and does not talk, even if I try.So I showed my displeasure by removing my mangalsutra as it affected by dignity. He has quoted only this act of mine in the notice. His condition not to file a divorce is that I stay with him in his house in Trivandrum. But no one knows that Iam married to him.He does not have job.He cannot support my children.

While I don’t think its right for your husband to demand money from you, its also not right for you to think so lowly of your husband because he doesn’t have a job. Perhaps he is trying but unsuccessful or that he’s just not even trying. In any case, in this day and age, a woman can get a job for herself and take care of herself and her children. Yes even in India, though it is a little harder there for women to find a job. But women have demanded equality for so long and they’ve come a long ways, so yes you shouldn’t depend on a man just for money.
