How do I write off these business expenses?

Will M asked:

I am a recent graduate and freelance journalist. More and more I realize I need a higher quality camera to take print quality pictures and a lap top computer to make me more accessible to the publications I work for.

Can I write off these business expences? I recently had to file for a FEIN number which in essence makes me my own business.

What steps do I have to take to file these claims? I have not made these purchases based on the fact that I can not afford them without making them a tax write off, but I am hindered in the amount of work I can do based on not having the proper equipment.

How to prepare for a newspaper interview?

hardoon asked:

On a whim, I responded to a recent ad recruiting freelance writers for a fairly large newspaper (circulation 100,000+). I have no experience as a journalist, but have written some articles and conducted CEO interviews for the executive newsletter published by a consulting firm where I worked. I’m not looking to embark on a new career, but I’ve always wanted to do some writing on the side about topics that interest me.

Surprisingly, I’ve been called in for a writing test and an interview with one of the editors this friday. Can anyone suggest what I should expect and how I might prepare? How frequently are freelancers usually put on assignment?

Magazine story ideas?

$+3p|-|@|\||3 asked:

Hey guys! I am a freelance journalist. I normally have tons of ideas, but at this time of year with finals and the holidays, I am running low on creativity.

What kind of things are on your minds for Spring, 2009? Or, what kind of things would you like to see covered in the kinds of magazines you read?

Thanks :)

How can I find work in Iraq as a videographer?

pomoblows asked:

I have a B.A. in Film Studies from a top liberal arts school. I have 3+ years as a freelance videographer, but none as a journalist. I have experience traveling abroad, a valid US passport, and the nerves to work under fire.

I’m not sure where to begin. I want to be on the fault lines of history. And I think Iraq would be a great place to build up my real. I appreciate and accept that Iraq is a dangerous place for journalists.

Where should I begin my search? How in need are US news agencies of American videographers willing to work cheaply in Iraq?

Any tips to get back into journalism?

csiders30 asked:

I was a journalist. A car wreck put me in the hospital for a few years. I regained my health and have been freelancing but seems like full time gigs are few and far between. Any suggestions? I know its “just keep knocking on the doors”. But anything else I can do?
